Ford may discontinue production of the electric F-150 Lightning, — WSJ
According to the Wall Street Journal, Ford executives are considering discontinuing the fully electric F-150 Lightning. 'There is simply no demand,' one dealer told journalists.
What is known
Ford announced the electric F-150 Lightning at an optimistic time for the electric vehicle industry. The company, like many others, anticipated a rapid increase in sales of its new electric vehicles. Initially, Ford planned to sell up to 150,000 units of the F-150 Lightning per year. But last year, it sold only 33,000, likely at a significant loss. So, it's not surprising that some Ford executives are considering halting production.
No final decision has been made yet, WSJ sources reported. These discussions were made even more absurd by the fact that just a week ago, Ford launched an advertising campaign to promote the Lightning's ability to power a home through the V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) system.
Ford's electric vehicle sales declined after the cancellation of the US electric vehicle tax credit. In October, overall EV sales fell by 24%, and the Lightning was already a loss-making project for the Blue Oval. Now Ford may not see any sense in keeping the electric pickup on sale. One dealer even told the WSJ that they don’t order the F-150 Lightning because no one wants to buy them.
