Toyota is developing a solid-state battery (Solid-State Batteries, abbreviated as SSB) capable of lasting up to 40 years, which is four times the current lifespan of electric vehicle batteries. Equally impressive is the company's statement that it plans to begin mass production of its solid-state batteries by 2027 or 2028.

What is known

The new batteries are expected to provide a range of more than 1000 kilometers. At the same time, they will be smaller, lighter, and cheaper than existing ones.

Keiji Kaita, president of the Toyota Advanced Engineering Development Center, stated that initially, the production of SSB will be more expensive. However, as production scales up, their cost will start to decrease.

In addition, Kaita mentioned that SSBs are likely to last longer than the vehicle itself. He stunned the audience at the Japan Mobility Show, stating that the goal is to maintain 90% battery capacity by the 40th year of operation.

In October last year, Toyota announced its collaboration with Sumitomo Metal Mining to help produce cathode materials for SSB batteries.
