Renault prepares the return of the internal combustion engine in the Megane
The new Renault Megane and Renault Scenic are currently only available in electric versions. However, their sales do not reach the initially planned levels, so Renault is preparing the return of internal combustion engines as part of hybrid powertrains.
What is known
According to the new CEO of Renault Group, Francois Provost, a new generation of Megane and Scenic will be introduced at the end of the decade, with the option to choose between fully electric and hybrid drive.
The new platform will combine future generations of Megane, Scenic, as well as Austral, Espace and Rafale, which are currently available only with hybrid systems.
Renault does not intend to completely abandon electric vehicles Megane and Scenic, but wants to attract new buyers by offering an expanded choice of powertrains. Including those who are not yet ready to fully switch to electricity.
Moreover, Renault management does not rule out the possibility of models with a range extender and plug-in hybrids. The Nissan E-Force power unit could serve as a reference, where the gasoline engine works only for charging the battery and the electric motor drives the wheels.
While the return of the gasoline engine is only being prepared, Renault plans an intermediate step — updating the Megane. A model facelift is expected, as well as the appearance of a version with an increased battery. Currently, the maximum capacity is 60 kWh and the range is 459 km. The Scenic has a larger battery — 87 kWh and a range of up to 615 km.
