It's not yet time for the release of Steam Deck 2: Valve engineer explained the company's position

Yesterday, Valve announced three new devices — the stationary console/PC Steam Machine, Steam Controller 2, and the VR headset Steam Frame. The new generation of the popular portable console Steam Deck was not among the presented gadgets, which was not a big surprise, as the company had previously said that the time for such a device had not yet come.

However, gamers still had questions, and IGN's editorial team reached out to Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais for explanations.

What is known

The developer confirmed that Valve does not see the need to release Steam Deck 2, as there are currently no technologies that would allow for significant performance gains and provide gamers with new opportunities.

According to Pierre-Loup Griffais, even a 50% performance increase would not justify the release of Steam Deck 2.

We are not interested in reaching a point where performance is 20, 30, or even 50% higher with the same battery life. We want more differentiation [in performance] than these indicators. So we have been working on developing silicon and architectural improvements, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what the next version of Steam Deck will be, but right now there are no chipset offerings on the market that we believe could truly become the backbone for a next-generation high-performance Steam Deck.
