The US Federal Court has issued a temporary ban on OpenAI's use of the word "Cameo" in the Sora app's functionality. The ban is in effect until December 22 and also covers similar variants, including "Kameo" and "CameoVideo".

What is known

The lawsuit was filed by Cameo, known for its service of ordering celebrity video greetings. CEO Steven Galanis stated that the court's decision confirms the need to protect consumers from possible confusion that could arise from OpenAI's use of the brand. According to him, the company attempted to resolve the situation amicably, but OpenAI refused to stop using the name.

In the Sora app, the cameo function allows users to upload their image so others can use it in videos created with AI. OpenAI said it disagrees that anyone can have exclusive rights to the word "cameo" and intends to defend its position in court.

A hearing on the case is set for December 19. The court will then decide whether the ban will be permanent.
