Signal launches secure backup on iOS
Signal has announced the launch of a secure backup feature for iOS users. From now on, iPhone owners can store their messages and media in an encrypted form, as it became available on Android back in September. The update was announced on social network X, with a reference to the company's previous post for Android.
What is known
The backup is not activated automatically, so users can decide for themselves whether to enable this feature. According to the message, Signal first tested it in the beta version for Android before introducing it on other platforms.
The service offers free storage of text messages and media for 45 days. If a user wishes to store files longer, a subscription for $2 per month is required. This is Signal's first paid service, explained by the high cost of storing and transferring large amounts of data.
A 64-character recovery key, which is stored only on the user's device, is used for secure access to the backup. In case of loss of the key, Signal will not be able to assist with recovery.
