Copilot is leaving WhatsApp: Microsoft is closing access to the chatbot
Microsoft announced that its AI chatbot Copilot will no longer be available on the WhatsApp messenger after January 15, 2026. After this date, users will not be able to interact with the bot on WhatsApp unless they switch to the web version or the official Copilot apps for Android and iOS.
What is known
The reason for this step is the new WhatsApp platform rules, which prohibit the use of the WhatsApp Business API for general-purpose AI bots. As Meta explained, these resources are planned to be reserved for businesses that directly serve their clients, rather than using the platform for distributing AI assistants such as Copilot, ChatGPT, or Perplexity.
OpenAI had previously also announced the cessation of support for the WhatsApp version of ChatGPT in January.
Copilot users on WhatsApp should take into account that their chat history will not transfer to other Microsoft platforms since the bot was operating without authentication. Microsoft recommends saving important conversations using WhatsApp export tools by January 15.
