Huawei, as previously announced, added a "wheelchair mode" to its smartwatches, which helps users with limited mobility track activity and health and replaces the usual step counting with wheelchair push registration.

What is known

The idea came after a suggestion from the Asian Paralympic Committee, and Huawei, as part of its "Technology for All" strategy aimed at creating inclusive solutions, implemented it in its smartwatches.

Bruce Li - Regional Manager Huawei CBG in the UAE, and Majid Rashed - President of the Asian Paralympic Committee

How it works:

  • the mode interface is adapted to the user, and instead of a runner icon, shows an image of a person in a wheelchair;
  • the system records the number and frequency of pushes, the distance covered, and calorie consumption;
  • the watch reminds users of the need for movement to maintain regular activity.

In combination with the HUAWEI TruSense system (continuous heart rate monitoring, SpO₂, calorie counting, and pressure/torque measurement), the Wheelchair Mode provides a comprehensive health profile adapted to wheelchair mobility.

The program algorithms were developed in collaboration with experts and users who move in wheelchairs and take into account the real characteristics of this kind of movement.

The function is already available in new models of Huawei smartwatches and is distributed via software updates. Huawei smartwatches switch to "wheelchair mode" with a single touch.
