RAM Shortage Worsens: Micron Technology Announces Exit from Consumer Market

Amid an acute shortage of RAM, American giant Micron Technology announced its exit from the consumer market.

What is known

The company, which holds over 20% of the SSD and RAM market, has decided to cease production of consumer models and has abandoned the Crucial brand.

The reason for this change in strategy is the company's desire to focus on servicing data centers for AI, as Micron sees the future of its business in this direction.

Micron Technology's Vice President and Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana commented on the decision:

The AI-driven growth of data centers has led to a sharp increase in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the crucial consumer business to improve supply and support for our large strategic customers in fast-growing AI segments.

Until the end of February 2026, Micron will continue to supply the consumer market, after which it will only provide warranty support.

Thus, after Micron's exit, only two major players will remain in the RAM market — South Korean giants Samsung and SK Hynix, leaving one to wonder how this will affect the global RAM shortage.
