LG accelerates SDV development: Eclipse SDV Community meeting takes place in Seoul
On December 4, the first Eclipse SDV Community meeting in South Korea was held at LG Sciencepark in Seoul. LG Electronics co-hosted the event alongside the international Eclipse Foundation. BMW, ETAS, and Hyundai Mobis also participated.
What is known
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss joint projects and open standards in the field of software for next-generation vehicles - software-defined vehicle (SDV). It is estimated that a modern car contains over 100 million lines of code. About 70 percent of this code is for core components such as operating systems, security, authentication, and communication modules. Despite the similarities, manufacturers often develop these elements separately.
The Eclipse SDV community aims to reduce duplication of effort and unite manufacturers around a common open-source foundation. This allows for cost reduction, accelerated development, and more attention to unique features, including in-car multimedia and driver assistance systems.
LG is involved in key community initiatives, including the SDV Community Reference (S-CORE) project, which is being developed with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It envisions the creation of unified software modules. The company also promotes its own Pullpiri project - a technology that ensures the operation of individual solutions based on a common architecture.
Additionally, LG is a member of the board of the international organization SOAFEE, which develops standards for embedded automotive systems. The SOAFEE community includes about 150 companies.
In Sok-hyun, President of the LG Vehicle Solution Division, stated that the company plans to continue collaborating with partners and developing open-source initiatives in the field of SDV.
