ChatGPT loses growth momentum as Google Gemini gains traction
The popularity of ChatGPT has started to lose growth momentum, according to new data from the analytical company Sensor Tower. Although the chatbot from OpenAI still leads in the number of downloads (50%) and monthly active users (55%) among mobile applications, it is Google Gemini that shows faster growth in several directions.
What is known
In particular, Gemini has surpassed ChatGPT in download rates, user growth, and time spent in the application. According to experts, such dynamics may allow Gemini to gradually close the gap, which OpenAI fears. In a recent 'code red memorandum', Sam Altman urged the team to focus on improving personalization, stability, and image generation.
In November 2025, ChatGPT had 810 million active users, but growth since August was only 6%, which may indicate market saturation. In comparison, Gemini grew by 30% during this time, thanks to the successful launch of the Nano Banana image generation model.
Also in the USA, Gemini is more often used directly from the Android system, rather than through a separate application, giving Google an advantage in countries with a large share of Android devices. Over the past seven months, Gemini increased its market share by 3%, while ChatGPT lost the same amount in the last four.
Serious competitors are also becoming Perplexity and Claude: over the year, their growth amounted to 370% and 190%, respectively. Although ChatGPT added 85% to downloads year-on-year, this is less than the average market growth (110%).
As of November, Gemini users began to spend more than 11 minutes a day in the application—a 120% increase since March. In contrast, average time in ChatGPT increased only by 6%, and in November even decreased by 10% compared to July.
