Chinese startup Xteink has unveiled the ultra-compact X4 e-book, which attaches to a smartphone using MagSafe and is positioned as a pocket-sized reading device for “on the go”.

What is known

The novelty measures just 114 × 69 × 5.9 mm and weighs 74 g, comparable to a cardholder. Thanks to the magnetic attachment, the reader can be attached to an iPhone or other smartphones with a magnetic case, and can also be used separately as a mini-reader.

The device is equipped with a 4.3” E Ink screen with a density of 220 ppi, which is lower than the standard 300 ppi of classic readers, but sufficient for displaying short texts, notes, and articles. It is operated via side buttons, but there is no touchscreen or backlight. Inside is an ESP32 processor, complemented by 128 MB of RAM and a 32 GB microSD slot. EPUB and TXT formats without DRM protection are supported, and files can be transferred via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

A 650 mAh battery provides up to 14 days of operation when reading 1-3 hours a day. The price of the device is only $69 (converted from yuan), making it one of the most affordable readers on the market.
