Seat and Cupra have opened a new battery system assembly plant in Martorell (Spain) for Volkswagen Group's electric vehicles. The plant will produce up to 300,000 battery systems annually for compact electric vehicles manufactured in Spain.

What is known

The investment in the project amounted to 300 million euros. The plant was built in less than three years, and its area is about 64,000 m². It is capable of producing one battery system every 45 seconds, which amounts to 1,200 battery systems per day and 300,000 per year.

From 2026, the plant will exclusively supply battery systems for the production of Cupra Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo models. The finished batteries will be delivered to the main assembly line via an automatic bridge approximately 600 m long.

Seat and Cupra call the launch of the plant an important stage in the electrification of the Martorell site and the development of Spain as one of Europe's centers for electric vehicle manufacturing. The new production is connected with the broader plans of Volkswagen Group and Seat to develop a line of urban electric models.
