Mercedes-Benz turned the Unimog into a truck that Maybach would be proud of
Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks presented an anniversary special version of the Unimog truck for its 80th anniversary, developed in collaboration with Hellgeth Engineering. This vehicle is focused on maximum comfort without losing off-road capability.
What is known
The concept is based on the Unimog U 4023 model with portal axles, a strong frame, and differential locks.
The main technical update is the installation of a 7.7-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine OM 936 instead of the standard 5.1-liter engine with a power output of 231 hp. The new unit develops 300 hp.
Outside, the vehicle received redesigned grille, bumpers, and thresholds, special body panels at the rear, matte gray paint, 20-inch wheel disks with beadlocks, and an original set of LED lighting. Instead of traditional mirrors, a MirrorCam system with cameras and displays is installed, which should facilitate driving both off-road and in tight urban conditions.
In the four-seater cabin, high-quality leather, contrasting stitching, LED ambient lighting, and leather floor mats are used. The project authors emphasize the unique combination of a utilitarian chassis with trim more typical of premium passenger models.
The Unimog was initially created as an agricultural machine in post-war Germany, and production under the Mercedes brand began in 1951. This single unit will be delivered to a client for operational testing, and based on the results, the company will assess the prospects for series production of more luxurious modifications.
