Samsung is actively working on a new foldable smartphone, which is currently codenamed Wide Fold and it definitely does not belong to the Galaxy Z Fold series — this was reported by the authoritative Korean publication ETNews.

According to industry sources, the gadget will be released next fall and will have an unusual aspect ratio — 4:3. Interestingly, the same format is reportedly used by Apple in its first foldable iPhone, which is also preparing for debut.

What is known

Insiders report that the internal screen of Samsung's device will have a diagonal of 7.6”, while the external one will be 5.4”. Both displays are OLED.
Rumor has it that Apple's parameters are almost identical: the internal screen is 7.58” and also has an aspect ratio of 4:3.

Such a format makes the screen more square — it is closer to the classic proportions of old TVs and is ideal for reading, working with documents, browsing web pages, and viewing photos. At the same time, modern smartphones and most video services are oriented towards widescreen 16:9 or 21:9, and the new aspect ratio may be inconvenient for some users.

According to sources, Samsung and Apple are returning to a 4:3 ratio because they focus on convenience:

  • the 4:3 format is better suited for books, notes, and multitasking;
  • fewer "empty" fields when browsing websites;
  • app interfaces are easier to adapt to a square display.

However, for movies and games, such a screen may be less comfortable — wide black bars are inevitable.

It is expected that both Samsung Wide Fold and iPhone Fold will hit the market in the fall of 2026 and start a new round of the foldable gadget rivalry.
