The conceptual smartphone Pixel Duo by the enthusiast known as Mechanical Pixel attracted public attention with its unusual design: instead of a single front display, the device features two screens of different types. The idea demonstrates how the advantages of classic IPS panels and energy-efficient e‑ink displays can be combined in one body.

What is known

At the top of the front panel is a 3.5” IPS display with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It is designed for watching videos, web surfing, and any tasks where color and smoothness are important. Below is a 5.2” e‑ink screen with a resolution of 1300 × 838 pixels and a density of 300 PPI. It only displays shades of gray, but is ideal for reading and energy saving.

This combination allows both displays to be used simultaneously. For example, music control elements can be displayed on the IPS screen, and a book or notes on the e‑ink. The concept also demonstrates the possibility of running applications simultaneously on different panels, turning the smartphone into a compact multitasking device.

Pixel Duo remains an experimental project and there is no information on plans for mass production yet, but the concept shows an interesting development direction for mobile devices.
