MediaTek introduced the Dimensity 7100 chip — a 6nm platform for budget 5G smartphones
MediaTek quietly announced a new mobile processor, the Dimensity 7100 — a mid-range processor aimed at affordable 5G smartphones. The new product follows the familiar architecture of the Dimensity 7000 series but offers improvements in energy efficiency, modem performance, and multimedia.
What is known
The Dimensity 7100 looks like an evolutionary update rather than a completely new architecture. It is similar in specifications to the Dimensity 7300 and several other MediaTek solutions but offers more modern energy efficiency and support for current standards, making it an attractive option for budget smartphones.
Key features
- process technology: 6nm TSMC;
- CPU: 8 cores — 4× Cortex-A78 up to 2.4 GHz + 4× Cortex-A55 up to 2.0 GHz;
- GPU: Arm Mali-G610 MC2, up to 8% faster than in Dimensity 7050;
- memory and storage: LPDDR5/LPDDR4X, UFS 3.1;
- camera support up to 200MP;
- support for resolution up to 1200×2600, frequency up to 120Hz;
- connectivity: 5G (up to 3.3 Gbps), Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, support for NavIC and other positioning systems;
- built-in support for 45W UFCS charging and a new power management system.
MediaTek claims the following improvements in energy efficiency:
- up to 5% more efficient in apps,
- up to 16% — when playing video,
- up to 23% — in modem operation.
There is also claimed faster application launch speeds and more stable multitasking compared to previous mid-range chips.
The Infinix Note Edge, a model with a curved AMOLED display and a focus on autonomy, will be one of the first smartphones on the Dimensity 7100. The chip is also expected in upcoming Tecno devices, including the Pova Curve 2 5G.
