SpaceX has received permission to launch an additional 7500 Starlink Gen2 satellites
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved SpaceX's request to launch an additional 7500 second-generation Starlink satellites. Thus, the company can launch up to 15,000 Gen2 devices into orbit.
What is known
The FCC also allowed SpaceX to upgrade the satellites, add new form factors, expand frequency usage, and add more orbital layers for optimized coverage. This will allow expanded access to internet and mobile services in various regions. It is also noted that Gen2 satellites will provide direct connection with phones outside the US and supplementary coverage within the country.
In the US, the company collaborates with the operator T-Mobile. Operator customers can already send text messages and use certain apps via satellite in remote areas. Voice call support is also planned.
The FCC announced the decision after SpaceX reported lowering the orbit for 4400 satellites from 550 to 480 km to reduce the risk of collisions. In 2020, the company sought permission to launch nearly 30,000 Gen2 satellites, but in 2022, the FCC approved only 7500.
