Apple faced significant challenges in developing the AI version of Siri. The intelligent assistant was announced in 2024 with promises of an imminent release, but the company repeatedly delayed it, which even led to a lawsuit from shareholders.

In November, reputable insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that to implement the new Siri model, Apple entered into a collaboration with Google and now this information has been confirmed.

What is known

According to an official statement, Google will provide Apple with a special AI model, Gemini, which will be used for training Siri, so that eventually it can handle user queries more effectively and provide the necessary information without the help of ChatGPT. The provided language model Gemini will have 1.2 trillion parameters compared to the current Apple model's 1.5 billion.

Apple and Google have signed a multiyear cooperation agreement under which the next generation of Apple Foundation models will be based on Google Gemini models and cloud technologies. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri, expected to launch this year.

After thorough evaluation, Apple concluded that Google's artificial intelligence technology provides the most efficient foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and looks forward to the new innovative capabilities it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and in the private cloud while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.
