Google added support for creating vertical videos in 9:16 format using references to the Veo 3.1 model. The format is geared towards platforms like YouTube Shorts, Instagram, and TikTok.

What is known

The update changes the nature of videos generated from images: improved detailing of facial expressions, character movements, as well as the consistency of backgrounds, objects, and textures. The algorithm more accurately reproduces scenes even with short text queries.

Google also integrated the feature into the YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create apps. Veo 3.1 first appeared in October 2025 with improved sound and enhanced editing capabilities. Now, improved image-based generation and vertical format support have been added to them.

The functions are available in the Gemini app, and for professionals in the Flow editor, via the Gemini API, Vertex AI, and Google Vids. The function for upscaling video to 1080p and 4K in Google Cloud has also been updated.
