Bandcamp bans publishing music created by artificial intelligence

The music platform Bandcamp has banned publishing tracks created "entirely or predominantly" using generative AI. Using neural networks to imitate the voice or style of other artists is also considered a violation. This is stated in the company's official blog.

What is known

The platform has provided users with tools to report suspiciously generated music. Bandcamp emphasized that music is more than just a consumer product, and "human connection through creativity is an essential part of culture and society."

Thus, Bandcamp has become one of the first services to clearly articulate its policy regarding generated music. Amid the growing number of the so-called "AI slop" — tracks without human authorship, other platforms are acting more cautiously. For example, Deezer reported that every day, 50,000 AI-created tracks are uploaded to its service, which constitutes a third of new music. Spotify only recently announced its intention to introduce a transparent policy for labeling such works.
