OpenAI announced the start of testing ads within ChatGPT for the free plan and Go subscription in the U.S. Over the next few weeks, adult users on these plans will begin to see sponsored content beneath chatbot responses.

What is known

The company emphasizes that ads will be clearly labeled, visually separated from responses, and will not affect the content of generated responses. All responses are claimed to be optimized based on the usefulness for the specific user.

Ads will not be shown in discussions on sensitive topics, including health, mental state, or politics. Ads will also be absent in chats with minors. OpenAI notes that it does not sell user data to advertisers and offers the ability to disable ad personalization as well as clear collected data used for displaying sponsored content.

Users will be able to ask clarifying questions about ad blocks, which distinguishes this format from traditional ads. If a user does not interact with the ad, the system will suggest specifying a reason. The company states that it aims to create new ad formats that are useful and appropriate. At the same time, OpenAI emphasizes that its main goal is to create products for which users are ready to pay.

Also, in the U.S., a new ChatGPT Go tariff plan is launching. Its cost will be $8 per month. This plan has been active in India since August. It provides higher limits on messages, file uploads, and image creation, as well as extended context for longer dialogs. However, even at this level, users will see ads. To get rid of them completely, a subscription to Plus or Pro is required.
