The German government has approved the parameters of a new subsidy program for private buyers of electrified vehicles. Support extends to fully electric models, certain plug-in hybrids, and range extender electric vehicles.

What is known

Subsidies are available for electrified models that have their first registration starting from January 1, 2026. The payment amount will range from 1,500 to 6,000 euros depending on the type of vehicle, income level, and family composition.

The subsidy is available both for purchasing and leasing new vehicles. Used cars are not included in the program. The total budget is 3 billion euros, which authorities estimate will be enough for approximately 800,000 vehicles from 2026 to 2029.

The base amount of support is 3,000 euros for electric vehicles and 1,500 euros for plug-in hybrids and models with a range extender. To receive the subsidy, such vehicles must emit no more than 60 g of CO₂/km according to the WLTP cycle or have an electric range of at least 80 km. The price of the vehicle does not matter.

From July 2027, the authorities intend to revise the conditions for supporting plug-in hybrids, focusing on actual CO₂ emissions during operation. All vehicles that received a subsidy must be kept in ownership for at least 36 months.

The government also noted that the program will support the European automotive industry: about 80% of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids registered in Germany last year were manufactured in Europe. In addition, new, more affordable models will soon enter the market.
