The Last of Us series may end in the third season: HBO chief hinted at the absence of further plans

Soon after the premiere of HBO's The Last of Us series, information emerged that viewers might see four seasons. Showrunner Craig Mazin stated this with the thesis that the events of the second game are so extensive that they cannot be organically fit into two seasons (second and third). However, it seems that the film company's plans have changed somewhat.

What is known

HBO chief Casey Bloys, in an interview with Deadline, made it clear that the third season of the adaptation of the famous game The Last of Us might be the final one.

In response to a direct question from a journalist about the series ending, Bloys replied: “It certainly seems that way.” However, the executive stressed that HBO relies on the showrunners in this matter, so “it's better to ask them.”

It should be noted that ending the series in the third season would be logical since there were already some issues with the script and directing in the second season. After its premiere, The Last of Us franchise creator and one of the show's showrunners, Neil Druckmann, announced that he will no longer be involved and will fully return to his duties at Naughty Dog studio.

The premiere of The Last of Us third season will take place on April 13 on HBO Max.
