OpenAI has made Codex available as a standalone app for macOS. This coding agent has now gained the ability to coordinate the work of several AI models simultaneously to perform complex tasks.

What is known

The company showcases a scenario in which Codex creates a Mario Kart-style game with eight tracks, different cars, and sets of bonuses. Visual elements were generated by the GPT Image model, while a separate agent handled the coding. Codex combined functions of design, development, and testing, including checking the gameplay.

The app now features a Skills section where instructions, scripts, and resources are collected to connect Codex to tools, start workflows, and perform tasks according to user parameters. An interface is available for creating and managing skills — Codex can use them both automatically and on direct request.

An Automations section is also provided for automating repeatable processes. Users can configure certain actions to run in the background on schedule. Codex is used in OpenAI's internal engineering processes as a developer assistant.

Codex is temporarily available to ChatGPT Free and Go users. OpenAI has simultaneously announced a rate increase for Plus and Pro subscribers.
