There's No Place for Generative AI in GTA VI: Take-Two Chief Assures Gamers That Rockstar Does Not Use Neural Networks in Game Development
Gamers are extremely negative about any use of AI, especially generative AI, in video game development, as its work is guaranteed to be weak, artificial, and utterly shoddy.
The gaming community eagerly anticipates the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, and it's hard to imagine the scandal that would arise if the most ambitious game in industry history included content generated by a neural network.
What is Known
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was quick to assure the community that Rockstar Games in no way used AI in developing GTA VI.
Worlds are created manually. That's what makes them stand out. They are built from scratch - building by building, street by street, district by district, and are not procedurally generated. This is what makes the entertainment truly great.
However, Zelnick acknowledged that neural networks are used by the company in other areas, which allowed for reduced time and financial costs, but since he did not specify what usage he meant, it is assumed that AI helps, for example, in information retrieval, schedule planning, press release writing, and other routine tasks.
Every Rockstar Games release has consistently raised the level of detail and set new standards for the entire industry, as evidenced by the phenomenal sales of their games. And, note, all this was done in times when neural networks seemed like science fiction, so there is currently no reason to believe that Sam Houser's company will depart from its principles.
When to Expect
The release of GTA VI is expected on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series.
