Mercedes-Benz Patented Head Massage Seats
Mercedes-Benz may take the massage function in cars to a new level. This is indicated by a recent patent application filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and noted by CarBuzz.
What is known
The idea of headrests with a massage function may seem unusual at first glance, but the company considers it a logical development of existing technologies. The patent description notes that severe stress in the driver or passenger can cause muscle tension, fatigue, and headaches, which directly worsens the travel experience.
The system has a complex design and operation scheme. Special sensors are supposed to determine the person's height and head position, after which the mechanism automatically adjusts for optimal impact.
According to the patent, the headrest proposes placing a central module connected with several movable elements on adjustable guides. These elements will be able to move, rotate, and vibrate, and the entire structure will turn, covering different head areas. The system will be powered by an electric motor and can either be installed directly into the headrest or integrated into an existing backrest massage mechanism.
Control is proposed in several ways. The massage can be activated via the multimedia system screen or using a smartphone, after which the user can adjust the zones and intensity of the impact.
Like other automakers, Mercedes-Benz regularly patents ideas that may never reach mass production. However, even if such a system seems questionable, it could potentially become a marketing advantage compared to competitors.
