Germany has become the second-largest producer of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) worldwide after China. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), in 2025 the country produced 1.22 million such cars, setting a record and surpassing the 2024 figure by 15%.

What's Known

China remains the leader by a large margin, producing 16.1 million NEV category vehicles, including electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, range extender models, and hydrogen cars. The production growth in Germany reflects a general trend in the European market: electric vehicle sales in Europe increased by almost 30% last year, reaching approximately 2.6 million units.

A total of 4.15 million passenger cars were assembled in Germany over the year, 2% more than in 2024. The production structure shifted significantly towards electrification: nearly 30% of all cars produced were fully electric, and with PHEVs included, the share of electrified vehicles reached about 40%.

Volkswagen remains the largest producer and seller of electric vehicles in Europe. In 2025, the brand sold nearly 275,000 electric vehicles, increasing sales by 56% compared to the previous year. Tesla, on the other hand, reduced its European sales by 27%, to 238,765 vehicles.
