Checks are canceled: Discord explained how user age will be determined
The Discord platform faced a wave of hate and criticism after it announced on February 9 that starting March all users must undergo age verification by providing a photo of documents or a short video selfie.
The outrage was so extensive that Discord's management, realizing its consequences, reconsidered its plans.
What is known
Discord published a message explaining that most adult users will not need to undergo any checks, as the available information is sufficient for the platform algorithms to automatically determine age.
Verification will only be required for those whose actions raise suspicion of mismatching the stated age, and in such cases, they will need to present a document.
For most adult users, we can confirm your age group using the information we already have. We use age prediction to determine whether a user is an adult with high accuracy.
This allows many adults to access features appropriate for their age without having to undergo explicit age verification. In cases where additional confirmation is required, we offer several privacy options through verified partners.
