Apple is preparing an update to the Podcasts app. The company has added support for its own HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) video streaming technology. Previously, the service played videos in MOV, MP4, and M4V formats, but is now moving to a more modern streaming standard.

What is known

HLS support opens up new possibilities for users. In particular, it will be possible to seamlessly switch between watching video and listening to audio. A full-screen horizontal display mode will also be available. In addition, users will be able to download both video and audio versions of podcasts for offline viewing. Previously, this was impossible due to the limitations of the RSS-based streaming method. However, RSS will remain one of the ways to distribute content.

The update also integrates a "picture-in-picture" mode for multitasking on iPad and other Apple devices. The system will automatically adapt the image quality depending on the internet connection speed, both in Wi-Fi and mobile networks, to ensure stable playback without delays.

The new version of Podcasts will be available on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and in the browser. Currently, the features are in beta testing, and the full launch is expected in the spring along with operating system updates version 26.4.
