The Vatican introduces a live translation service for liturgies using artificial intelligence. Visitors to the Papal Basilica of St. Peter can now listen to and read translations of the Holy Mass in real-time in 60 languages.

What is Known

The project is implemented in collaboration with Translated, a company specializing in language technologies. The Vatican notes that the basilica has welcomed believers from around the world for centuries, and the new tool aims to help people of different nationalities better understand the liturgy. According to Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the technology is intended to serve the mission of the Catholic Church as a universal community.

To use the service, visitors simply scan a QR code in the basilica. This then opens a webpage on their smartphone with audio and text translation of the service. There is no need to download a separate app.

The technology is based on the Lara AI tool, which Translated introduced in 2024. Developers claim that the system works by considering linguistic features and the experience of hundreds of thousands of professional native-language translators.
