Android Authority shared interesting information about the new face recognition system being developed by Google for its gadgets.

What is known

Sources describe the system under the codename Project Toscana as simple and not requiring complex cameras and sensors. All that's needed for Google's biometrics to function is a small module built into the front camera cutout.

Allegedly, the system is similar to Samsung's Polar ID, information about which appeared at the beginning of the month, and uses infrared illumination, then captures light reflected from the user's skin, and works faster than Face ID in an iPhone, and moreover, is less dependent on the quality of lighting.

An insider claims to have personally tested Project Toscana on a Pixel smartphone and on two Chromebooks with external cameras, and was impressed by its performance.

Previously, Google experimented with face recognition in the Pixel 4, but it used a complex system of 3D cameras that took up a lot of space in the smartphone, and it was abandoned.
