Audi Sport division has unveiled the new RS5 — the first in the history of the 'four rings' RS model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

What is known

Audi has retained the 2.9-liter V6 engine with twin turbochargers for the new RS5. In the version without an electric motor, it develops 503 hp, which is 59 hp more than its predecessor. The engine works in tandem with an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic and a Quattro all-wheel-drive system with rear axle torque vectoring. The RS Torque Rear mode emphasizes the rear wheels — it is intended for off-road use. The transmission can transfer up to 85% torque to the rear or up to 70% forward, depending on driving conditions.

The key innovation is the 174 hp electric motor. In total, the hybrid system delivers 630 hp and 825 Nm. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes 3.6 seconds, and the top speed reaches 285 km/h.

The battery with a capacity of 25.9 kWh allows you to travel without starting the ICE. In the city cycle, the electric range reaches 87 km. Full charging takes about 2.5 hours.

However, electrification has affected the weight. The RS5 Avant station wagon weighs 2,370 kg — that's 625 kg more than the previous version. Moreover, it is 280 kg heavier than the larger Audi RS6 Avant with a petrol V8 without a hybrid system. The weight increase is not only due to the hybrid setup but also the enlarged dimensions of the base A5 model, which replaced the A4.

The appearance has become more aggressive. The body has been widened by 9 cm at the front and rear compared to the standard A5. The front features functional air intakes, and the rear has oval exhaust tips closer to the center of the bumper. Available are 20- or 21-inch wheels behind which optional carbon-ceramic brakes can be hidden. Matrix LED headlights with darkened graphics, black Four Rings logos, and OLED taillights with a checkered flag pattern emphasize the top version's status.

The interior has undergone moderate changes. Three screens and touch control panels are retained. Sporty seats with pronounced side support and diamond stitching, with electric adjustment and massage function, are installed. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather and has flattened top and bottom sections. RS buttons allow you to change driving modes and activate the Boost function for 10 seconds for a short-term power increase.

The starting price of the sedan (in fact, it's a five-door liftback) in Germany is 106,200 euros, and the Avant station wagon — from 107,850 euros. For comparison, the BMW M3 with all-wheel drive and 530 hp is priced from 107,600 euros, and the BMW M3 Touring — from 108,900 euros. The production of the new RS5 will be established in Neckarsulm.

Orders in Europe will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and the market launch is scheduled for summer.
