The head of BMW M claims that future electric cars will create an emotional connection through simulated gear shifts and sounds.

What's known

By 2027, the debut of the electric BMW M3 with the internal index ZA0 is expected. Later, it may be joined by the X3 M (ZA5) with a four-motor setup similar to the sedan.

Despite the absence of an internal combustion engine, the new electric M models will receive sound accompaniment and gear shift simulation. According to Frank van Meel, head of the department, it is not an attempt to "pretend" to be a gasoline car. The goal is to maintain the driver's emotional connection with the car through familiar acoustic signals and sensations.

He noted that it is easier for people to perceive and understand what they are accustomed to. Acoustic feedback helps feel a connection to the road. Therefore, new electric cars will feature emulated gear shifts and sound accompaniment inspired by the brand's classic engines.

However, this is not just about reproducing recordings. BMW has previously recorded the sounds of the BMW M3 GTS, BMW M4 GTS, and BMW M6 models. These audio fragments will be combined with the basic sounds of the electric motor to create a unique acoustic environment for electric M cars.

The system is expected to be defeatable if the driver does not want to use the simulation. It is not yet specified whether similar solutions will be available for the M Performance lineup models.

BMW M will also continue to produce cars with internal combustion engines. The new generation M3 with the index G84 and an inline six-cylinder engine is scheduled for release in 2028. Preliminary information suggests the model may receive a mild hybrid system, automatic transmission, and xDrive all-wheel drive.

In the future, versions with V8s will remain—specifically, the future X5 M (G95) and X6 M (G96). They will coexist alongside fully electric counterparts.
