The publication The Information shared new information about OpenAI's plans to release its first smart devices.

As is already known, the company plans to release TWS earphones in 2026, but they will not feature innovative AI features since the respective project has been indefinitely postponed due to global component market issues.

What is known

According to The Information, OpenAI is closest to releasing a smart speaker equipped with a facial recognition system resembling Face ID. It will allow the gadget to recognize the user and monitor conversations in a specific area, and its biometric sensors will enable various actions, such as making purchases, without a smartphone, computer, or other additional devices. It is expected that such a speaker will cost $200-300.

Furthermore, Sam Altman's company is working on smart glasses and a kind of lamp that, it is believed, will resemble Apple's prototype.

These devices are in the early stages of development, and the company has yet to even create their first working prototypes, but OpenAI's plans remain on track.

All these devices are being developed by the studio of veteran Apple designer Jony Ive, which OpenAI acquired in 2025 for $6.5 billion. Recall that Jony Ive is one of the most famous industrial designers with extensive experience in creating successful and popular gadgets. But whether he will manage to realize OpenAI's ambitious ideas remains to be seen.
