The US government announced the launch of a new initiative, Tech Corps — a program that combines the format of Peace Corps with a focus on artificial intelligence. It involves sending STEM and AI specialists to other countries as part of a strategy to enhance American influence in the global technology market.

What is known

Tech Corps will operate under the aegis of Peace Corps and will recruit graduates of technical specialties or professionals with experience in the field of artificial intelligence. Volunteers will be sent to countries participating in the American AI Exports Program — a program created last year by an executive order of President Donald Trump to strengthen the US position in exporting AI-based solutions.

Participants of Tech Corps will help implement artificial intelligence in agriculture, education, healthcare, and economic development. Both in-person missions lasting from 12 to 27 months and remote cooperation formats are envisaged. For those working abroad, the program will provide accommodation, medical insurance, a stipend, and compensation for voluntary service.

Acting Peace Corps Director Richard E. Swartz noted that initiative participants will contribute to the development of the technical capacity of partner countries, support the implementation of AI in critically important areas, and help overcome barriers at the stage of practical implementation of solutions.

Despite the stated focus on helping host countries, the program also has a strategic goal — to secure US leadership amid growing competition in the global AI market, particularly from China.
