Marvel's Wolverine may never be released on PC: Insider reports on Sony's strategy change
Gamers have already gotten used to major PlayStation 5 exclusives soon being released on PC, which is why when the company announced the release date of Marvel's Wolverine, there was no doubt that in 2027 the brutal superhero action game would come to PC, as will happen with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which will reach computers on March 19 — just ten months after its release on Sony's console.
But it seems that the Japanese company has reconsidered its strategy.
What's known
Authoritative insider and Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier expressed confidence in the latest edition of the Triple Click podcast, and later on the Resetera forum, that story-driven PS5 exclusives might stop being released on PC, with the first such game being Marvel's Wolverine, which will be released on September 15.
He emphasized that this game might “never be released outside of PS5,” and at least at the moment Sony and the developers from Insomniac Games are not considering such an option.
Schreier also noted that so far ports of PlayStation Studios games have not been as commercially successful as Sony expected, and dropping them would not be a serious blow to the business, although it is worth noting that their production does not require many resources.
It feels like they were initially acting cautiously — as if testing the waters, releasing games on PC with a big delay and not rushing fully onto this platform.
An important clarification is that all of the above does not apply to service games, such as Marathon, since it is critically important that they are released simultaneously on PC and PS5. As an example, Schreier named the cooperative shooter Helldivers 2, which generated most of its profits specifically through sales on Steam and attracts a solid audience there.
Sony has not yet reported any changes in its strategy, so PC gamers still have hope that they will be able to experience Marvel's Wolverine themselves, and not just watch streams and envy PS5 owners.
