“Big Brother” Watches Burger King Employees: AI Assistant Monitors Staff's Politeness with Customers

Big businesses are rapidly integrating AI into all possible areas, and the fast food chain Burger King has come up with perhaps one of the most unexpected applications of this new technology – to improve staff communication with customers.

What is known

Almost five hundred Burger King restaurants in the U.S. have begun testing the Patty AI assistant, developed based on OpenAI technologies. It is integrated into the headset of operators and waitstaff and monitors politeness during their communication with visitors. The algorithm recognizes polite words and informs managers, who have access to Patty, how many times a particular worker has said "welcome", "come again", "thank you please", and, conversely, how many times the employee ignored a greeting or was even rude to a customer.

When training AI-Patty, information was used to help determine the "friendliness level", gathering data from Burger King managers and restaurant visitors.

For now, this is just a pilot project, and a mass launch of Patty is not planned, but…
