Rivian Unveils RAD: Pushing Electric Cars to Extreme Limits

Rivian introduced a division called RAD — Rivian Adventure Department. This is the public establishment of the engineering team that develops the extreme characteristics of the brand's models.

What is known

The most powerful versions of the Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S with a four-motor powertrain are distinguished by their road dynamics and serious off-road capabilities. The company decided to formalize this direction in the likeness of Mercedes-AMG or BMW M.

The chief engineer of the Rivian R1, Luke Lynch, noted that the RAD division is responsible for maximizing the potential of the cars, testing them in challenging conditions — from climbing the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to participating in the Rebelle Rally desert race.

According to him, competitions are just part of the process. The main goal is a comprehensive check of all systems, components, and algorithms. Testing in harsh conditions allows pushing the limits of electric motors, thermal management systems, suspension, and software.

Rivian emphasizes that the result of such work will be a balanced vehicle, and the introduction of new features will be an additional bonus. Whether the formation of the RAD division will lead to the emergence of special series or new versions of models is not yet specified.
