Meta has signed a multimillion-dollar licensing agreement in the field of artificial intelligence with News Corp. The agreement involves using The Wall Street Journal content and other media holding brands for Meta AI chatbot responses and company model training.

What is known

News Corp confirmed the contract signing but did not disclose details. According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta will pay up to $50 million per year under the three-year agreement. It covers the holding's publications in the USA and the UK.

Previously, News Corp signed a five-year agreement with OpenAI, estimated at around $250 million. The company's CEO, Robert Thomson, recently stated that the media group is at an "advanced stage" of negotiations with other tech companies.

He described News Corp's approach as a "woo and sue" strategy — to cooperate with those willing to pay for content and to sue those who use materials without permission.

Meta did not comment on the deal. Meanwhile, the company has been signing licensing agreements with media in recent months, preparing new generations of its artificial intelligence models and expanding Meta AI capabilities.
