Ford's New Patent: Removable Charging Ports Could Transform Future Car Interiors
Ford has filed a patent application for a removable charging device that could potentially appear in future brand vehicles. The application was filed on August 20, 2024, and published on February 26, 2026, under number 0336195.
What is known
The "Blue Oval" explores various options for using interchangeable interior elements. Previously, patent documents revealed concepts for modular interfaces for screens and USB ports, as well as replaceable cabin components. The new application continues this concept and describes a system of removable charging ports.
According to the patent, it is a block with several connectors of different types designed for charging tablets, smartphones, and other devices. In modern cars, such ports are usually stationary and do not imply relocation.
The proposed system makes the block removable. Additionally, the design includes a grid and holder to secure devices during charging. It also allows for the installation of panels of various designs and configurations.
A Ford representative told Ford Authority that filing patent applications is a common practice to protect new ideas and build an intellectual property portfolio. However, having a patent should not be seen as confirmation of specific plans for putting a product into mass production.
