Nintendo Sues U.S. Government for Damages Over Trump's Illegal Tariffs, Impacting Switch 2 Launch
The American division of Nintendo filed a lawsuit in the US Court of International Trade against the US government, demanding compensation for the trade tariffs imposed by Donald Trump in early 2025.
What is known
The defendants in the case are the Department of Treasury, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Customs and Border Protection Service.
Nintendo's lawyers refer to the US Supreme Court's decision, which in late February found Trump's tariffs illegal. The gaming company reasonably believes that, as a major importer, it suffered due to the unlawful actions of the US government and demands compensation for the damage.
Nintendo notes that it had to delay the start of pre-orders for the portable Switch 2 console in the US and increase the cost of some accessories, which undoubtedly affected device sales. Nintendo's lawyers demand a refund of the paid tariffs with interest, but the specific amount is not indicated (although it is undoubtedly calculated), as well as reimbursement of reasonable legal fees.
