The head of the robotics hardware direction at OpenAI, Caitlin Kalinowski, announced her resignation after the company signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. She announced her decision on social media platform X.

What is known

Kalinowski was responsible for the hardware aspects of the company's robotics projects. In her message, she criticized the haste of the decision to cooperate with the U.S. defense department, stating that the announcement of the partnership took place without clearly defined restrictions on the use of technology.

According to her, the issues of potential surveillance of citizens without judicial oversight and the creation of autonomous weapons without human involvement required much broader discussion. She emphasized that primarily it's about management issues and the lack of clear rules for the use of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI confirmed Kalinowski's resignation and stated that they currently do not plan to appoint a new head to her position. The company also noted that they understand the presence of different views on the use of AI in the field of national security and will continue dialogue with interested parties.

The company's statement mentions that cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense implies responsible use of technology. In particular, OpenAI emphasized that it does not support surveillance of Americans and the creation of fully autonomous weapons. Previously, company CEO Sam Altman also stated that the terms of the agreement may be adjusted to explicitly prohibit the use of technology for surveillance of U.S. citizens.
