Last week, newly appointed head of Microsoft Gaming Asha Sharma announced the Xbox console, which is being developed under the working name Project Helix. As promised, the first official information about the new platform, which confirms many insider theses, was announced at the GDC 2026 conference.

Microsoft revealed some technical features of the device and plans for the platform's launch.

Hybrid Console: Xbox + PC

The main idea of Project Helix is to erase the boundary between console and PC gaming. The new system will run both Xbox games and Windows-PC projects, effectively turning it into a hybrid of a console and a gaming computer.

According to Xbox's Vice President of Next-Generation Devices Jason Ronald, the platform is designed for a unified gaming space between different devices and operating systems, and the launch on the platform of third-party stores, including Steam and EGS, will undoubtedly help.

Technical Architecture

Project Helix is being developed in collaboration with AMD and will feature a custom processor optimized for the next generation of DirectX and upscaling technologies, which will provide the following improvements:

  • drastic improvement in ray tracing performance — Microsoft claims an "order of magnitude" improvement compared to current consoles;
  • neural rendering and ML-acceleration, including frame generation and intelligent image scaling;
  • a new version of AMD FSR, which will be called FSR Diamond, and multi-frame generation technologies to enhance performance. FSR Diamond will be specifically optimized for Helix and deeply integrated into the system;
  • most graphical computations will be processed by the built-in GPU, reducing CPU load and speeding up simulations and rendering of large virtual worlds;
  • neural texture compression and improved DirectStorage handling, allowing faster asset loading from SSD. In short, games will load even faster.

Backward Compatibility

Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix will provide backward compatibility with all generations of Xbox, expanding the strategy laid out in the Xbox Series X|S.

Coming Not Soon

Microsoft plans to distribute the first alpha versions of devkits in 2027, most likely at the beginning of the year since insider information indicates the console is planned to be released at the end of 2027.
