One of the main priorities of the next generation Xbox (Project Helix) is full backward compatibility with games from all generations of Microsoft consoles. The new device will be released at best in late 2027, but the American company will not wait for this event and will already offer Xbox Series users updated versions of some games this year.

What is known

At the GDC 2026 conference, Xbox vice president for next-generation consoles, Jason Ronald, mentioned that 'as part of the Xbox brand's 25th anniversary, the company plans to re-release some iconic games from past years that can now be played in a completely new way.'

Most likely, these are not full-fledged remasters, but an expansion of the backward compatibility program, as there were mentions of integrating an HDR mode and increased frame rates.

Recall that the last time Microsoft added to the backward compatibility game catalog was in the fall of 2021, and at that time noted that due to licensing, legal, and technical limitations, adding new games to the catalog was no longer possible. But apparently, something has changed...
