British scientists from University College London (UCL) have achieved an impressive result: they have set a record for the speed of data transfer through the 6G mobile internet network.

Here's What We Know

The team of researchers managed to develop data transfer speeds of up to 938 Gbps - this is more than 9000 times faster than the average 5G speed (about 100 Mbps). At this speed, it is possible to download 25 films in 1 second or a 130GB game (e.g. Black Myth: Wukong) in just 1.1 seconds.

This result was achieved through a combination of electronic and optical transmission methods, overcoming the limitations of wireless networks. Usually such networks use radio waves on a narrow range of frequencies, but the congestion of these bands significantly slows down the transmission speed. The researchers used a wider frequency range by combining radio technology and optical solutions.

Two frequency bands were used to achieve this speed: one around 100 GHz and the other in the 130-175 GHz range. The stability of the signal was ensured by a quartz oscillator, which is similar to those used in computers to keep the processor frequency stable.

Study leader Dr Zhixin Liu commented on the work:

'The new approach combines two existing technologies - high-speed electronics and millimetre photonics - to enable the transmission of huge amounts of data at unprecedented speeds.

The new system will not only help to increase data transfer speeds, but also solve the problem of simultaneous data transfer for a large number of users.
