Lucid Unveils Futuristic Autonomous Taxi "Lunar" with Impressive Efficiency to Rival Tesla's Cybercab
Lucid Motors has unveiled the concept of the autonomous robotaxi Lucid Lunar. The novelty is expected to rival the Tesla Cybercab and is part of the brand's strategy to develop autonomous services.
What is known
The premiere took place at the Investor Day event in New York, where the company also showcased future electric crossovers Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth. All three models will be built on the new midsize platform Lucid.
Currently, Lucid Lunar exists only as a concept. The vehicle is designed for two passengers and fully autonomous operation—no steering wheel or pedals. The interior is equipped with a large central display, and the model's design resembles a smaller version of the Lucid Gravity crossover.
The company is focusing on high energy efficiency. The robotaxi has a claimed range of 5.5–6 miles per kWh, which is significantly higher than the average of modern electric vehicles. This is to be achieved through optimized aerodynamics and reduced aerodynamic drag, allowing for a smaller capacity battery.
The platform will feature an 800-volt architecture, enabling fast charging to add over 320 km of range in about 15 minutes. For comparison, the Lucid Gravity crossover can replenish about 320 km of range in 12 minutes at a 350 kW station.
It is currently unclear when Lucid Lunar will enter mass production. Now, Lucid Motors is focused on launching midsize electric vehicles and developing autonomous driving technologies. The company collaborates with Uber and Nuro in this field. If these projects are successful, the robotaxi may have a chance for mass production.
