BMW iX3 Production Boosted at New Hungary Plant to Meet Surging Demand
BMW has increased production of the electric crossover BMW iX3 at its new plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The plant is already operating in two shifts to cope with the high demand for the model.
What is known
Since the debut of the BMW iX3 in September last year, the model has accounted for about one-third of all orders for BMW electric vehicles in Europe. In January, the automaker announced plans to add a second shift, and this decision was implemented faster than expected.
At full capacity, the Debrecen plant is capable of producing up to 150,000 cars per year. Production of the standard version of the crossover with a regular wheelbase (index NA5) is initially focused on this site.
BMW iX3 production plans to expand further. Assembly is also expected at the BMW plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico — launch is scheduled for mid-2027.
Additionally, production of the version with an extended wheelbase (NA6) will begin in China this year. Such vehicles will be exported, including to India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Deliveries of the standard version of the BMW iX3 have already started in Europe, and the model will hit the US market later this summer. According to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, private customers and corporate fleets are interested in the electric crossover. A significant portion of buyers previously did not own BMW vehicles.
Currently, only the 50 xDrive version is available for sale, but more affordable 40 and 40 xDrive modifications are expected in Europe by the end of the year. A more powerful M60 version will also appear later, and the full-fledged new generation BMW X3 M is expected to debut in 2027.

The BMW Neue Klasse family started with a crossover, but a sedan is also on the horizon. The new electric BMW i3 will be unveiled on March 18, and its production will begin in the second half of the year at the Munich plant. To make room for this model, production of the BMW 3 Series will be moved to the Dingolfing facility. The new generation sedan with index G50 should hit the assembly line by the end of the year.
