Toyota Unveils Redesigned Steering Wheel for GR Yaris 2026, Inspired by Professional Racers
Toyota created a new steering wheel for the GR Yaris hatchback. Changes for the 2026 model are a response to feedback from owners who complained about grip discomfort.
What's known
The discomfort of the previous steering wheel was explained by the placement of the control buttons. They were too close to the rim, causing drivers to accidentally press them during active driving. Engineers solved this issue by developing an entirely new steering wheel, based on feedback from professional racers.
The new steering wheel was tested on a racing track using prototypes made from clay. As a result, buttons were relocated closer to the central part around the airbag module. Additionally, the grip area was increased and the diameter of the steering wheel was slightly reduced to ensure faster steering reactions.
The design has also changed: instead of the Toyota logo, the GR sub-brand badge is now installed. New switches on both sides received illuminated rings. Meanwhile, steering wheel heating can now be ordered along with the vertical handbrake.
Updates for the Toyota GR Yaris do not end there. The car has received new Bridgestone Potenza Race tires with a modified rubber compound, tread pattern, and internal construction. The manufacturer claims they are quieter on regular roads and more "grippy" during dynamic driving.
The shock absorber settings have also been revised and the electric power steering system has been updated.
