Vivo Enters the Race: Futuristic Smartphone with Vertical Sliding Screen Unveiled

In early March, Samsung surprised the public with a concept of a smartphone with a sliding screen — the prototype was shown at the MWC 2026 exhibition and with an initial diagonal of 5.1” with an aspect ratio of 16:9, it literally stretched to 6.7” with a 22:9 ratio with a simple movement.

It seems that the story with stretchable screens might become a new trend, as it became known that one of the largest Chinese brands, Vivo, is also working on a similar gadget.

What is known

Vivo has filed a patent application for a smartphone with an unconventional design. Unlike Samsung, whose screen stretched along with the body (as far as could be judged by a short video), Vivo's extra part of the display extends vertically upwards from the body, yet the screen itself appears seamless. From the back and sides, the whole structure resembles old sliders, although, of course, this analogy is not entirely accurate.

Thus, the height of the smartphone increases significantly, and the aspect ratio becomes more elongated, which will affect the visual perception of content.

Of course, there is no guarantee that Vivo's concept will reach full commercial implementation, but the idea certainly deserves attention.
